NURSING AT MESSIAH VILLAGE, MECHANICSBURG, PA
Client:
Messiah Lifeways
Program:
32 Nursing Units, Supporting Back of House Spaces
Size:
31,000 Square Feet
Completion:
2017
Scope:
Although Messiah Village has a sterling reputation for nursing care, like many communities its age the “bricks and mortar” did not live up to the quality of care. Many of the 184 nursing beds were arranged according to an institutional model with long double-loaded corridors and centralized living areas. The goal of the project was to transform as many beds as possible to a household model without disrupting on-going operations or decreasing adjacent parking. The solution was to span the existing perimeter road and parking with two levels of sixteen rooms each arranged in a home-like pattern with short corridors and centralized, light-filled living areas. Each household of sixteen has a welcoming front porch as one steps off the elevator. Services are delivered to the central dining off the backside of the elevator through a private service corridor. Resident rooms are generously sized with large windows for light and views and private bathrooms, accessed through a space-saving barn door, with roll-in showers and abundant shelving for storage of supplies. For those who prefer a bath there is a beautiful, light-filled bathing spa provided in each household.
